Can a bot summarize your Telegram group?
Only if it receives the messages. Telegram's privacy mode passes a bot in a group only the messages addressed to it, unless you make the bot an admin. Cole, the AI assistant from Pocodot, answers in Telegram groups when tagged, but it keeps no message it was not asked, so Cole cannot summarize a Telegram group's conversation. It can sum up a message you reply to, text you paste, and what people asked it in the group.
What a bot sees in a Telegram group
Telegram decides which group messages reach a bot. With privacy mode on, which is the default for bots, a bot in a group gets messages that tag it, replies to its own messages and commands, plus service messages such as people joining or leaving. A bot that is a group admin gets every message. Telegram's own documentation spells this out in its privacy mode section and bot FAQ.
So a "summary bot" that recaps the whole conversation has to be an admin (or have privacy mode turned off), and it has to store the group's messages as they arrive. Before you make any bot an admin, read what it keeps, where and for how long.
Telegram's own AI summaries
In January 2026 Telegram added AI summaries for long posts in channels and for Instant View pages. Telegram's announcement covers channel posts; it does not describe summaries of group chats. For a group conversation you still need a bot that can see the messages, or a copy of the text.
What Cole does in a Telegram group
Cole joins a Telegram group as the bot @Cole_chief_of_staff_bot. Unless it is an admin, Telegram passes it only messages that tag it or reply to it. As an admin it receives every message, answers only the ones that tag it, reply to it or call it by name, and drops the rest without keeping them. That is a privacy choice: nothing said in the group reaches Cole's memory unless someone asks Cole.
That also means Cole cannot summarize a Telegram group's conversation. Here is what it can do:
- Sum up one message. Reply to a long message and tag Cole with "summarize this". Cole sees the message you replied to (the first 500 characters of it) along with your request.
- Sum up text you paste. Copy the part of the chat you want summed up, paste it into your private chat with Cole, and ask for a recap, the decisions or the open questions.
- Recap what the group asked it. Cole keeps the questions people asked it in that group and its answers, so "@Cole_chief_of_staff_bot what did we ask you this week?" works.
- Remind the group. Ask Cole to post a reminder in the group at a set time, such as Friday's meeting.
Everyone who asks Cole in a Telegram group needs their own Pocodot account linked to Telegram. Full setup: how to add Cole to a Telegram group.
| Option | What it can summarize | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A summary bot you make admin | The group's messages from the time it joined, if the bot stores them. | The bot receives every message in the group. Check its own privacy terms first. |
| Cole, tagged in the group | One message you reply to (the first 500 characters), and what people asked Cole in that group. | Not the rest of the conversation: Cole keeps nothing it was not asked. |
| Cole, in your private chat | Any text you paste in. | You choose and copy the messages yourself. |
| Cole in a WhatsApp or LINE group | The group's conversation since Cole joined, once an account pays for the group. | Only if your group can use WhatsApp or LINE instead. |
If your group needs full recaps
In WhatsApp and LINE groups Cole works differently: once an account pays for the group, it keeps the group's messages as background and can recap what was decided, while still replying only when someone tags it or calls it by name. See how to summarize a WhatsApp group chat and how Cole works in group chats for exactly what it keeps in each app.
Honest limits
- Cole cannot summarize a Telegram group's conversation, admin or not: it drops messages that are not addressed to it.
- When you reply to a message and tag Cole, it sees only the first 500 characters of that message.
- No bot, Cole included, can read Telegram messages sent before it joined the group.
- Everyone who asks Cole in a Telegram group needs their own Pocodot account linked to Telegram. One person can agree to pay for the group's questions, but not for the accounts.
- Cole does not moderate groups. Keep your moderation bot alongside it.
