Can you add ChatGPT to a WhatsApp group?
No. OpenAI says ChatGPT is no longer available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, because of a change to WhatsApp's terms, so there is no ChatGPT number to add to a group. A WhatsApp group can use Meta AI, which is built into WhatsApp, or add Cole, an AI assistant from Pocodot that joins the group by phone number and answers when someone tags it or uses its name.
What happened to ChatGPT on WhatsApp
People used to message ChatGPT on WhatsApp through the 1-800-ChatGPT contact. In October 2025 OpenAI announced that, because of a policy and terms change from WhatsApp, ChatGPT would no longer be available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026. It asked people to link their WhatsApp chats to a ChatGPT account before then to keep their history, since WhatsApp does not export those chats.
The change is in Meta's terms for the WhatsApp Business Platform. Section 4.7 bars providers of general-purpose AI assistants from using that platform when the assistant is the main thing being offered. AI that is only a part of a business's own service, such as a shop's support chat, is not what that section targets.
So a guide that tells you to save a ChatGPT number and add it to your group is out of date.
What a WhatsApp group can use instead
| Option | How it works with your group | Good for | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta AI | Type @Meta AI in the group, or a member adds Meta AI as a group member, where Meta offers it. As a member it can read and respond to new messages sent after it was added (source). | Quick answers, planning, polls and summaries of long threads, as Meta lists them. | Free for everyday use, Meta says (source). |
| ChatGPT group chats | Not in WhatsApp. ChatGPT has its own group chats inside the ChatGPT app, and you invite people with a link (source). | Planning or drafting together, if everyone is happy to move the conversation to ChatGPT. | OpenAI says group chats came to logged-in users on its Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans. |
| Cole | You add Cole's WhatsApp number to the group as a participant. It answers when someone tags it, uses its name or replies to it. | Reminders posted in the group later, recaps of what the group said, translations on request, and tasks with your own email and calendar. | Free to start with 150 one-time credits, then from $19 a month for 2,000 credits. |
| Copy and paste | Copy messages into the ChatGPT app yourself and paste the answer back into the group. | A one-off question. | Whatever your ChatGPT plan costs. |
What Cole does in a WhatsApp group
- Answers when someone tags @Cole, uses its name or a nickname the group gave it, or replies to one of its messages. If Cole has just asked you something, your answer reaches it without a new tag.
- Recaps what the group said since it joined: "Cole, what did we decide about Saturday?" See how to summarize a WhatsApp group chat.
- Posts reminders in the group at the time you set, once or on a daily or weekly schedule. See a reminder bot for your WhatsApp group.
- Answers each person in the language they write in, and translates a message when asked. See how to translate WhatsApp group messages.
- From your private chat, works with your own Gmail, Google Calendar or Outlook, and asks before anything goes out in your name.
Cole is a separate assistant made by Pocodot. It is not a version of ChatGPT, and it does not need anyone in the group to have a ChatGPT account.
How to add Cole to your WhatsApp group
@Cole hi in the group from the WhatsApp number on your account. Cole answers from your own credits, then asks you once, in your private chat, whether your account should pay for everyone in the group. Say yes, and everyone in the group can ask Cole. Nobody becomes the payer without saying yes.Full steps and limits: How to add Cole to a WhatsApp group. Privacy rules for groups: how Cole works in group chats.
Honest limits
- Cole sees only messages sent after it joined the group.
- One account pays for Cole's replies in a group: the person who said yes when Cole asked in a private chat. Nobody becomes the payer without saying yes. Until someone does, each person with their own Pocodot account pays for their own questions. A WhatsApp group Cole has newly joined can try Cole once for free: someone without an account may get one short answer to a text question, with a line on how to link an account. Requests that need tools, files or live data need an account. Otherwise, Cole may post a short note on how to set the group up.
- Cole can post a simple WhatsApp poll when asked, but it cannot close it at a set time or read the votes; see what AI can do with polls.
- Apart from the one free answer a new group may get, every answer uses Pocodot credits: the group payer's, or until someone says yes, the asker's own.
